I have decided to write a response to Miss Holly's latest post (click here) on healthy eating/exercise whilst studying.

~*~

Can you study and maintain some form of healthy lifestyle - or even go as far as loose some unwanted kilograms? I never would of though it possible, especially during my first year!

It was late night study sessions fuelled by red bull, chocolate, chips, ice creams and lollies - rushed days driving/busing around that usually ended up with my grabbing something from the deli/shop whilst on my way somewhere. I stacked on the kilo's big time and generally felt uber depressed about the whole dang thing!

In my defence.. when the body goes into stress emotionally it responds physically by feeling the need to stock up on carbs etc incase they are needed and also your body craves feel-good hormones (found in chocolate) so really it was just a biological response.. (i am in no way knowledgable on such topics and this should b taken with a grain of salt..)

But then enough was enough and I decided to change things, yes it takes a bit of planning - but it is working for me and I am still losing a little bit each week (or maintaining weight) and not big losses but enough to keep me going and to make my jeans just that little bit looser!

Anyways here are my "golden" tips - the ones I try to make sure I do no matter what...

1. Carry a huge mofo bottle of water with you E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E!

I know.. every man and his dog says it, but being dehydrated is just going to give you headaches and that's the last thing you need on top of your busy lifestyle!

I use one similar to this one.. except its that "smash" brand, holds 1L :)

2. Cook extra food and dinner time and eat it for lunch the next day.

It doesn't take you any longer to do and that way you have a lunch, it may not be healthy (depends what it is) but way better then over processed bought food and saves you time. Even on a study day - you will eat it if you know its there!

3. If you don't buy It then you won't eat it.

(Pretty much my weight loss motto)

So you are walking down the aisles doing your food shopping.. ooohhh the lolly/soft drink/chips aisles.. TURN AROUND DON'T EVEN GO DOWN THERE GET AWAY!!!!

If you buy it for later.. guess what - you will eat it later. If you buy it for the kids/hubby -you will eat it later. No if's, no but's, no coconut-covered chocolates, IF YOU PUT IT IN YOUR TROLLEY YOU WILL END UP EATING IT!!! I promise you. You want a snack? Get some nuts/grapes/yoghurt/muesli bars for gods sakes.. If you are that desperate for a snack - you will chew, swallow and enjoy it.

4. Breakfast.

Yup, I said it - breakfast!

Even if its just a piece of fruit or a shake it is better then nothing and gives your brain and body fuel for the day ahead. Some mornings I have to literally force food down my throat, but I have been feeling better for it!

5. Walk

Park your car as far away from places as possible/get off at an earlier stop.

Then you are forcing yourself to exercise - and that is pretty much all you will be able to fit in! Also enjoy those few minutes alone/study free.

And I'll say it again WATER lots of water - if you go to bed dehydrated, even if its 6pm and you wake up at 7am you will feel hungover and feel like crap. Pretend to be a camel if that helps.

Thoughts on change & picspam

I find myself changing.. not in a bad way - but still the feeling is incredibly strange, like I have hopped onto the wrong bus - but feel like its the right direction..

I am starting to take better care of myself, eat better, drink more, exercise - play with my kids and actually do my homework! Also taking time out for me and savouring the small things in life...

My taste in music is also changing, as it tends to as the years go by.. but this time I find myself listening to things such as nature sounds (forests/the ocean) and classical music, loving me some Beethoven and Tchaikovsky right about now..

Also I haven't had a proper cup of tea in well over a week, but find myself sipping on Chai and peppermint tea - the fruity new age hippy tea I once so despised..

Change is a good thing - I know that.

And I think this is good for me, I think that they are little bits of me that are emerging from deep hidden places, and now that I am being a more POSITIVE person and being HAPPY they feel it is safe to come out. As I do not care for what others think of me, I do not care if they simply do not note my exsistence I am who I am, I love what I have and I have what I love. My beautiful perfect little family - they are all mine and I know they will always take me as I am.

My daughter turned two today. I am proud of her she is so beautiful and getting so so grown up! but 2! and we aren't having anymore babies and it just makes me sad that she is getting older.

she wont b so cute soon.. or cuddly or want to play dollies. Little kid's dont last long enough :( i mean our adult life goes for like 90years.. you only get to be a kid for 10 :( and that sucks!! argh lots of tears today i wish i could have them be a baby for 2 years and 1 for 2 years and 2 for two yeears.. to give me more time to soak all this in to savour and enjoy it so much more!

And don't get me started on mr 4!! such a big handsome smart kind little boy I have so so awesome in everyway! already back talking tho lol haha..

I do burlesque dancing for fitness every Thursday night.
It is fun, boots my self esteem and makes me feel more confident!
Also I get to dress up (if i wish) with the potential to win prizes.
Last week I won for the first time :)
So that has made me want to get dressed up more!
On Thursday night I will show you what I ended up wearing - it is 60s/Austin Powers themed as we are going to be doing go-go dancing.

From now on Thursday night/Friday will be Burlesque Time & I'll share my outfits :)

As of next Monday I am officially in my second year of nursing at university.

It is pretty daunting and even though I am only part time this year the work load is still really heavy, which is making me freak out slightly!

Although after reading the week one power points for my two units "Pathiophysiology & Pharmacology" & "Medical/Surgical Nursing" I can tell it is going to be a highly interesting semester of study and that I will be able to learn and right about some pretty amazing things for my assignments.

It pains me to say it, but it means I may be on a slight hiatus again (yes I know after only recently returning to the blogosphere!) but I will try to post as often as I can.

An Update, Some Outfits and A Recipe

So the past 24hours has been a bit of an emotional ride for me.. last night at 11pm my oldest brother Dean hopped on a plane back home after being here for almost a month :(

(PS: since when was I a motherfecking ghost? for cereals?!)

Secondly my gorgeous handsome darling little boy started KINDERGARTEN! Oh em gee!! I was freaking it on the way there, but I knew he would be alright when he came up to me and so nicely asked, "Mummy.. are you going to go yet?"

Butter Chicken

2 tsp minced garlic

2 tsp ground ginger

1 tsp chilli powder

2 tsp garam masala (indian spice mix)

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp ground coriander

1 tsp cinnamon

2 tsp oil

1/2 cup chicken stock

410g can big red tomato soup

3/4 cup thickened cream

600g chicken breast - diced

1. Combine all the ingredients listed before cinnamon with the chicken in a bowl and refrigerate for at least an hour.

2. Heat oil in frying pan, add the cinnamon then the chicken mix. Cook until the chicken is browned and the delicious fumes are butt-raping your nostrils.

3. Add the tom puree and chicken stock, bring to the boil - then simmer for 30mins.

4. Stir in the cream, heat through and serve over rice.

Misfits.

The "Misfits" is a UK comedy/drama that centers around a group of five 20-somethings doing community service for various crimes. They get caught up in a freak storm and afterwards find that they each have a power. The show follows them as they kill their psychopathic probation officer (storm powers made him crazy violent) and meet other various other people who have newfound powers after the storm. This show has loads of funny moments and super awesome twists, there are two seasons out at the moment and I am currently watching the second.

Time lord travels the universe with his companion helping various creatures and generally saving the universe from all sorts of trouble. (Do I really need to continue - we all know who the Dr. is!)

Serial killer who works as the blood spatter guy for the Miami police department. He only kills other serial killers and bad guys following a code his foster dad taught him whilst he was a teen. I have watched all 5 seasons and desperately want to watch the 6th when it hurries up and gets made! The plot twists and detail in this series are some of the best I have ever watched.. also the starting sequence has got to be an all time favourite (below).

Centers around a working class gal living in Bon Tempes, USA just after the vampires come out into the open. Filled with supernatural drama and sexy southern accents (also Eric *swoon*) there are 3 seasons and well well WELL worth the watch.

American comedy that follows a small group of doctors from when they are interns to fully fledged doctors. The whole show is inner-monologued by the main character JD. Very very funny (but the last couple of seasons are shite IMO)

Apologies for not being much of an online prescence of late but I have had some rather personal issues that have needed my utmost attention. Also being on prac.

Tempted to quit having so much sugar and also fizzy drinks, but one thing at a time tho haha...

Picked my oldest brother dean from the airport at 7:30 last night :) took him shopping today, had lunch. Sleeping at mums tonight so i can chill with my bro's and her and watch DVD's play some PS3..

Eat some popcorn.. ya know all that fun stuff.

Also there will be jammies involved haha. I sleep over my brothers about once a month to just play vid games and watch anime i always conk out early.. made it to 10:30 last time .. lets see if i can beat the record this time haha.

So my best mate and I went to a series of $5 taster classes at the Sugar Blue Burlesque Lounge in Northbridge.. and I think I am in love♥
My favourite of the classes was the Bump 'n' Grind, and they hold casual classes weekly on thursdays for $14.00.
& I am going!!!

I just want to stop being so fucking addicted and live more in the real world. As much as I love all the beautiful friends I have made online over the years, I think I need to work on real life friendships and bonding a bit more as I only really have one good friend and have been known to cancel on mates for parties so I can sit at home on le facebook and doing other random web stuff.

Don't get me wrong, facebook is awesome - you can keep in touch with friends/rellies and share pics, play games etc and without the wonder that is facebook i never would of gotten back in contact two of my older brothers and my nephew. Not dissiing facebook - just how much time i spend on the bloody thing :) also have it on my phone.. gah! bad idea :P

2011 Year of the Life Overhaul.

This year I will:

Eat Healthier

I plan on trying new healthier recipes and learn to love meals rich in vegetables and whole grains. I will also drink more water and cut down on the sweet and savoury "treats".

Exercise at least One Day a Week

This one shouldn't be too hard. One day a week could mean a 20min walk, a 30min go on Wii-Fit or a gym glass. Baby steps into the exercise front.

Be Happier

I will try not to let the small things get me down, I will try to smile more and do little things that will leave me feeling good. Pay for a manicure or put a couple of gold coins into a charity tin.. small things.

You pack some cool tunes, cold bevies, thongs, short shorts, a straw hat and your phone.

You spend the afternoon relaxing in the sun, tipsy and laughing with mates.

Bob: Hey honey theres this nice park with lots of stuff for the kids an hour north of the river - do you want to take the kids next weekend?

Margo: Bob you could of given me more notice! Could we make it the weekend after? Ugh never mind.. I suppose next weeks ok..

The day before: You go to the shops and buy some cooked chickens/buns/salad/a bag of ice. You get home and prepare said food for the next day.

The night before: you pack the kids bags, load up what you can into the car and have everything organised on the table.

6am: Kids burst through your door... MUMMY DADDY LETS GO TO THE PARK YAY YAY THE PARK WOOHOO!!

The next 2 hours spin by in a blur of cereal, sunscreen and hats as you flurry about getting the kids dressed sunsmart, packing nappies and clean clothes and suitable shoes.

You wear your sneakers, your baggy mum shirt and your knee length denims with your sensible cap.

You spend the day chasing after your kids, dealing out no's and the occasional smacks. You have a hurried lunch and try to battle the ants and gulls for your food. You leave around 1pm (before it gets TOO hot) and drive home in silence as the babies sleep and you wish you could do the same.

All in all a hectic NEVER AGAIN experience. Much like the zoo.

It's two days after Christmas and I have the flu! Also its supposed to get to 40+ degrees today (that's celsius), so feeling pretty yuck at the moment!

I started my being healthy thing again today.. now that the Christmas feasting is over for another year - let's see how I go! Will weigh myself later and tell you all my starting weight (gasp!).

For Christmas I got Kings of Leon tickets, a Nokia E63, cupcake stuff (apron, moneybox, tea towel, pj's), Gold Class movie tickets, a cupcake maker and a Craft Calendar + DC comic stickers (thank you princessgeek!)

it's times like these when you realise what is important in your life.

when you notice all the small things you never noticed before, from how gorgeous your mother is.. to how your little brother's hair curls - just so. To how your father-in-law get's these little creases on his forehead when he is stressed. Time's like these are when you need to be with your family, you need to make that effort to go visit your Nanna who has been crying with worry, to sit with your brother-in-law and watch shit on youtube, to give your sister-in-law a hug.

Family is important.

I love my family, and I love the family I have been blessed enough to marry into as if they were my own flesh & blood.

There are tough times ahead, and christmas will have a little bit of a dampner on it this year - but we can get through it.

We will beat these problems as they come.

Gave up on the 30 days thing already :)

also been on prac for 2 weeks with 1 more to go and I am over it. not entirely, just the boring parts where there is nothing to do :P but i got to do a urinalysis, dressings, showers, pressure bandaging, hoisting and saw a suprapubic catheter get changed.

I searched high and low today for some high waisted shorts and these are the pair that I managed to find (for only $15!):

I have my driving test for my phase 2 learners permit on the 20th December, I am kind of freaking out about it - but I am sure I will do fine :) desperate to be a P-plater so I can do what I want when I want dammit!

My best friend is hopefully coming over tomorrow to cut my hair (and the chillens) I need something done with my fringe and side bits.. I am not touching the rest as I am trying to grow out layers!

First noticed him at the Year 11 ball, I kept looking at him, he kept looking at me (later found out he was looking at my tits!!!) then 2 months later my friend and I had a big party for our 16th birthdays and Aaron went - he was sick and I was running around getting him water and panadol, spent the night hugging him watching movies. Next day was my actual birthday and he asked me out. 2 weeks later we went on a group date with our mutual friends and in the dark cinema we started kissing (it involved skittles - i kind of jumped him lol) so it wasn't the best first kiss.. but it was memorable.

To be perfectly honest the only religion I know anything about is Christianity. I don't even know that much! I like the ideals that many religions hold, be good to your family, don't steal/drink/do drugs, be good to each other etc etc. But I find it incredibly unrealistic that we were created by some higher being. That this whole planet was created in however many days/minutes/seconds etc by some gigantic man who lives in some magical place.

I do believe in the idea of faith. & if believing in such a person helps this faith - then so be it, but at the end of the day you need to be the one who gets the gears in motion and makes changes in your life, no amount of praying/worshiping is going to make what you want magically appear/fall in your lap.

When asked my view on religion I usually reply with - you don't know shit on the subject until you are dead & buried. As how can we? Who knows.. one second you're there the next you're at pearly gates/crawling round as a dog/fucking 40 virgins/completely non-existent/a ghost. How can you foresee the truth? You can't.

Hope this hasn't offended - wasn't the plan.

I hate beer. I drink wine (moscato, resling and sweet white) and I drink spirits (gin is my fav, with jager then vodka respectively). I have no problem with drinking, although binge drinking I now see is meaningless and essentially a waste of time and money! But I do believe most people learn that in their own time. Alcoholism on the other hand, the addiction - I have a problem with. Like drugs.. overuse fucks up your body, your life and your families. Social is ok :) it's Australia it's what we do!!

So.. I am really sick.

Yesterday I had a bit of a sore throat - that was it.. was studying last night still feeling rather crap also had period cramps (hurting like a mofo) and it was 9pm, I was soo close to finishing my questions! then i woke up at 12am :| and i was on the bed, lights off, everything packed away, I had nodded off and aaron had moved me and everything else lol. Also felt like crap really bad guts ache.. anyways went back to sleep and this morning OMG

i eat healthily all day long and drink lots of water.

it gets to after dinner and.. i binge on crap.

and drink soft drink.

I mean what the hell? i'm not starving myself.. today I had a shake, huge bowl of soup, big salad, whiting fillet an apple and 2 cups of tea. plus a mini meatloaf, handful of chips and a tablespoon of gravy. That is a lot of food! so why did i feel the need to skull 2 cans of pepsi & munch a roast lamb and gravy bun?? and why are you now craving chocolate? are you for real? come on emma.. get your head in check.. why make all this healthy eating effort just to fuck it up after 6? whats the point? ARGH.. also.. exercise.. ya know that bike you got? USE IT!!! or the wii fit you bought? USE IT!!

jeez em, seriously.. don't complain that you are fat and jiggly if you aren't going to do something about it!

In the past I have never really gotten into Christmas arts and crafts and decorating mayhem, but after seeing this advent calendar on Homemade by Jill's blog I decided I am going to join in the fun!

So it is off to spotlight today for some supplies :)

A Message To My Thirteen Year Old Self.

This post has been inspired by my beautiful friend Michelle, who has been concerned about how distressed some of our teenage population seem to be getting over small things like boys, looks and rebelling. This will be a deep and meaningful post for me as my teenage years were hell.

Dear Me,

You are now a teenager and I feel there are a few things I need to tell you about yourself and about other people. First of all and what I feel is most important...

People are c**ts. That is a fact, especially when they think they are "better than" you. They will say nasty things, give you dirty looks, spread rumours, occasionally throw stuff at you and a whole long list of other things. I know it isn't nice and I know that as much as I tell you not to, you will get upset and head home to your pillow and cry your eyes out. These experiences hurt - they make us feel worthless and pathetic, we feel unloved, unwanted.. but they shouldn't - they should make you feel proud, proud that you are the better person - you aren't small enough to get joy out of harm to others. These things WILL make you stronger, it may take time, but they will. I mean - you get to twenty and some people still bully - but you laugh it off and stand up for yourself, because of what you have endured as a teen.

FYI your school has counsellors and also a school nurse. They are fantastic to talk to if you - I know it's embarrasing and everyone will think you are "crazy" (your opinion not mine) but you need to tell someone what is going on if it is upsetting you enough that you have thoughts of self-harm or you are crying every night.

You are going to have your heart broken at least once but boys will come and go. And in my experience most teenage boys are jerks who think with their doodle. They can also be very mean, it does not mean they like you - it means they are a**holes who have no idea how to treat a woman!! Go for the nerds, the quiet ones. They are sweet, loving and RESPECTFUL and really that is what you deserve. Also one day they might make millions (uh Bill Gates anyone?). And ANY boy who makes you feel pressured into ANYTHING is in no way, shape or form worth your time. Who cares if you get a "fridgid" reputation - it's better then being called a slut, wart-girl or having a baby before you are ready.

Also don't tell people who you have a crush on.. there are always those b**ches that tell everyone then you get the "SALLY LOVES JACK, SALLY LOVES JACK" immature bullshit - save that for your diary. And in 5 years time you won't think they are good looking anymore anyways (more so you will think "what was i thinking?")

I know homework is horribly boring and stale and classes take way too long and just drag on.. but pay attention.. just a little bit. Get your work in on time and don't stuff around in class too much.. grades do matter and if you stuff up your education you will most likely regret it later. But at the same token if you do badly, there are ways around this - don't stress, just requires some hard work when you are older. I regret not doing my work, but at the end of the day I did the hard work and am now at uni studying nursing.

Parents - they are nosy, they want to know e v e r y t h i n g that is going on in your life. They are also so mean (whyyy can't i have a new phone/puppy/car/clothes/credit card/more pocket money) and they just don't understand. And they don't understand because they were born in the stoneage at the age of 30 and things have changed since then, I know that, I get it. But seriously they ask because they care, they wanna know that their baby is safe, and loved and doing well. Boys.. I know you are already well and truly familiar with your mini me, but pay some attention to your testicles. Testicular cancer is most common in males aged 15 - 25. All you have to do is roll them around, have a feel and get to know them and what is normal. Once a month, after a shower - again it could be the habit that saves your life.

When I was 19 I found a lump in my breast during a routine feel around, I knew it wasn't normal. I got it checked out and it wasn't anything serious. But what if it had of been and I hadn't of found it? Think about that one. nineteen.

Made A Pretty Epic Decision

Next year I will be hopping down off of the full-time student ladder and down a rung to part-time. Mainly to avoid the 6 solid weeks of prac mid-year (i have two bubbies I don't wanna). It's not too bad I am hoping to get a job as a PCA (personal care assistant aka carer) casually on night shifts/weekend shifts (hello $40 per hour!) Anyways I say I have made the decision (which I have) but we need to have a "family discussion" on the matter first. :) which will be happening tonight. Anyways I have finally got this vintage hair/makeup thing down pat and in an easy-as-pie fashion so I can throw it on daily/nightly and ever-so-rightly (thankyou youtube tutorials!)

I think I am going ok with my dieting. I haven't had a weigh in for almost 3 weeks (due to being busy or the chemist I go to being busy lol) But I am hoping to do so tomorrow. I also need to buy my gorgeous bestie something for her 21st. I am not sure what to get her. She likes very different things to me (blacks, reds, skeletons, marilyn manson etc) so my idea of perfect birthday gift is gonna be rather different!! Dear Emma,

Sorry to be the bitch again as usual but you need to hear this from me.

You knew this whole deal wasn't going to be easy and you promised me you would push through and do it anyway, that you COULD do it and that you COULD manage. You have the support network of family, friends and teachers. You have the time (oh god how you have the time -which you waste on other things). You also have the skill and the smarts, you just choose to tell yourself differently. Stop caring how everyone else is doing with their homework stuff and get your ass into gear to finish your own. If you want to go and study then go and study - if it makes you a loner tough titties because at the end of the day getting through this thing and passing is what matters!

I know you hate not playing/spending time with the kids - but at the end of the day you need this, you need to get a good job so your kids can have everything they need including your OWN house, your own HOME to fill with as much arty farty retro shit as you please. The kids are young, they don't overly care as long as the time you spend with them is filling and you make the most of it. Also lots of cuddles and kisses and watching them sleep will help - trust me.

Not spending time with/talking to friends - yes they probably get a bit upset but if they are real friends then they will understand and get over it and party with you when you have your diploma.

Also you need to get off your ass, book some driving lessons and get your liscence - the longer you leave it the longer it will be until you can go shopping when you want, go to the markets when you want and visit your mum whenever you feel like it. You will also not have to use public transport and sit on a bus filled with stinky teenage boys (doesn't that sound great?!) FREEDOM, Emma, freedom. Just keep that in mind.

It's a bit too late for this semester but as good a time as any. Get organised and I mean really organised. You need to find a system to store all your notes and assignments in. You need to figure this out before next semester so we avoid the F-word again.

You hate that word. You heard it for the first time yesterday and admit it - it hurt. It really really hurt. 3 hours of crying into Mr Handsome-Pants chest, a whole bar of chocolate and half a bottle of wine helped you feel better, but it isn't going to stop it happening again. Harden up and get on with it princess - you need to prove to those teachers that you can do it and that you are going to make the best mother fucking nurse in the country.

As for losing weight. That needs to come last. Keep on those shakes, walk when you can, ride your bike to the train/school and the numbers will drop. Trust me on this. The less you make a deal out of it the easier it will be.

Now get off of the net and finish writing your essay. Also give popeye a kiss - she's looking adorable whilst she eats her cheese toasty.
